A former security guard at the BBC has been jailed for 11 years for “engaging in conduct in preparation of acts of terrorism.”

Richard Dart and his co-conspirators, Jahangir Alom and Imran Mahmood, were sentenced at the Old Bailey last week for the offences committed between July 2010 and July 2012.

According to a recent article in the Telegraph, “Dart refused to stand when he was sentenced, saying: ‘I don’t wish to stand up, I believe ruling and judging is only for Allah’. The judge said that they were all “committed fundamentalists” who would have been prepared to kill.”

Dart and Alom had previously travelled to Pakistan to try and get terrorist training. Dart also conspired with Mahmood to build a bomb and the target was thought to be the town of Wootton Bassett, a military repatriation town in Wiltshire.

In order to remain undetected, Dart and Mahmood used a Word Document on Dart’s laptop to discuss their plans. Each would take a turn to type their message before deleting the text. Both Mahmood and Dart were unaware that the text would be stored on the laptop, even after they had deleted it, leaving forensic experts with 2,000 pages of code to sift through in order to make out the pair’s conversations.

The head of the Met’s Counter-Terrorism Command, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Osborne, stated that the investigation had involved a “mixture of dedicated, diligent traditional detective work combined with the latest technology and computer techniques”, according to a report by the BBC.

Working closely with the police, Terminal 1 was evacuated and specialist officers were able to conduct further investigations. We thank passengers for their patience while our staff were working hard to return the operation to its normal schedule.”

Around 10 flights were delayed following the incident though no other areas of the airport were affected.

Private Security Guards in Indonesia showed off their skills at a demonstration in Solo, Central Java.

Exhibiting their ‘immunity to harm’; some of the Guards had a number of bricks smashed over their heads, while one officer demonstrated his ‘immunity’ to having his throat slit as a machete was run dangerously close to his throat.

Private Security Guards, such as these men, are often used to guard banks, school and offices in Indonesia.

A growing concern has emerged in recent years regarding the use of private security organisations.
This concern stems from a decline in authority with some Police Organisations that have allowed civilian groups to act as security guards and fight crime instead of fully trained police officers.

Three would-be illegal immigrants were stopped from entering Britain after they was found by a sniffer dog inside a truck of coffins.

The truck was a Bulgarian registered vehicle carrying coffins that were for a funeral director in west London. The Truck was being checked over by UK immigration officials when one of the sniffer dogs alarmed them of the stowaways.

“This was an unusual type of discovery,” admitted Paul Morgan, the South East England and Europe director for the British Border Force.

British immigration officers work in ports in northern Europe. They regularly use sniffer dogs as part of their investigations.

According to airline workers there are travellers with no disabilities using wheelchairs to jump to the front of security lines and then get up and walk once through. This is not actually illegal as federal regulations mandate that travellers are provided with wheelchairs when requested and staff need not ask for proof of disability.

Staff said that they expect these scams on busier flights with heightened security. They also call these ‘miracle flights’ as travellers that have needs assistance and a wheel chair seem to be able to just walk off the flight at the end of the journey.

Kelly Skyles, a flight attendant and the national safety and security coordinator for the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents American Airlines attendants said ‘We’d say there was a miracle because they all needed a wheelchair getting on, but not getting off.’

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Wagstaff said the operation had been challenging: “The professionalism and courage of the officers involved and the risk managed and removed by the team led by Detective Inspector Colin Douglas cannot be overstated. These are dangerous men dealing in firearms and the skill of the teams deployed and at court was exceptional.”

Earlier this year UK airways had a meeting government and US embassy officials, who showed their support for the idea of using US security checks in UK airports.

A member of the department of transport stated “The airlines confirmed there was a commercial appetite for this in the UK, even if airlines had to contribute towards the cost.”

US pre-clearance facilities already operate in Canada, several states in the Caribbean and Ireland where they allow for a faster processing through their arrival airport in the United States including the checking through of any baggage to the traveller’s final destination.

A DfT spokesman said: ”The decision on whether to operate US pre-clearance at airports overseas ultimately rests with the US authorities. However, the government believes that introducing these measures at UK airports would deliver a number of immigration and security benefits and would also improve the passenger experience.”

Full body scanners are being scrapped at Manchester Airport after failing to get approval from the European Commission.

The scanners used a low dose of x-rays to scan through clothing and produce a naked image of the passenger, showing any items they had on them. Critics said the machines invaded passengers’ privacy and the radiation they generate raised the risk of cancer.

They will be replaced by “privacy-friendly” scanners at a cost of £1.3m and an extra 55 security staff. The new scanners do not need a member of security to check the images but more staff are required to frisk passengers when the images show potential “threat areas” suggesting there might be concealed items.

The head of the security firm G4S has said he expects the firm to be paid the full £235 million for the Olympics even though they failed to deliver.

G4S admitted last month that the Olympics had cost it £50 million after it failed to deliver on the amount of security guards needed, but he stated that he expects the games organisers to pay saying: “I expect them to pay us absolutely in line with the contract. That’s exactly that contracts are for”

London 2012 Chairman Sebastian Coe told the committee: “It is difficult to look beyond their inability to deliver on the contracted number of security personnel that we were consistently assured by them that they would be able to deliver.”

LOCOG stopped payments after G4S said it would not be able to deliver, they had already paid the firm £90 million but they have now said the remaining payment is now up for negotiation.
